CN GP7 #4396

Ninety Seven

Here we have a locomotive that was inspired by a chance prototype sighting. The locomotive had the windows boarded up. I posted about thin in response to an article that I responded to in Model Railroad Hobbyist Magazine. Here is the post. I used Balsa wood for the ply-board, weathering is done using acrylics. .

Temiskaming & Northern Ontario 80078 36' "Old Timer" Box Car

 Ninety Four

Quick post. Some work I have done on a 36' "Old Timer". This is a older Roundhouse kit. No graffiti, some dirt and rust. One thing about this build is that I painted the car as it was undecorated.

Here is an example of some of my weathering work that I had previously done on my steam locomotives. The engine is a Bachmann 4-6-0 with 63" Drivers.

CP 365342 & 365345 100 ton hopper

Again these are nice Bowser kits. Easy to assemble, nice detail, and at a good price. These two cars were weathered to appear not to long in use, 2-3 years. Most attention was paid to dirt, grime and rust. The weathering here is done with acrylics, the technique used is primarily dry brushing.

Kilmister 285 & Snaggletooth 279 40 Ton open Hopper

 Seventy Five

These cars are Bowser kits and were a really enjoyable to assemble and paint. Again, my photo skills are not the best. These 40 ton Hoppers represent two old cars that I use on my HO Scale layout. The intention is for them to appear well used and old. Seventy Five is slightly out of focus but there is a good shot of the trucks. Seventy Six shows off some of the appearance of texture. What I was hoping to show with Seventy Eight was how I was able to get into areas while assembling the kit. One advantage of kits is painting hard to reach areas before they become hard to reach. Seventy Nine shows the patch of Snaggletooth over Kilmister. It is amazing what the camera reveals, I think I need to go back over the lettering here.

A late addition to this post but a much better shot of how you are able to do good detail weathering in tight spaces on kits as you can weather before assembly.

CELX 1124 20,700 Gallon Non-Insulated Tank Car

 Seventy One

A 20,700 Gallon Non-Insulated Tank Car. The focus was to be a dirty underside. Small graffiti. I added a little bit of rust and grime to the tank seams to make them pop a bit.

Seventy Two, Three and Four

Details of the end of the car. Work on this car was done on acrylics.

Here we have another commissioned work. This is an Athearn tank car kit that was given to me assembled. I did a medium weathering job with some rust and went light on the graffiti. Weathering was done with acrylics, rust with oils and graffiti with paint markers

As a side note, in searching RR Pictures Archives it appears that CP mostly used these cars for MOW or internal purposes.

(This image is copyright Ian McCord and used by permission)

 Hello all,

Above is a photo of the prototype car. I was commissioned to replicate it onto a nice new Exact Rail version of this car.  I normally do not do such requests as I find it easier to capture the essence of a prototype car over an exact duplicate. For this request the weathering and graffiti work was such that I was comfortable with the request. Please see the results below.

Paints were a combination of acrylic and oils. Graffiti was done using paint markers.

MILW 4630 Hi Cube Box Car

Here I also had some assistance. "FRIGR" is not my work nor is the other side of the car. I went over the whole car, added "Zone" and did the stencil as the numbers had been obscured. Thanks to FRIGR and the others for helping the development of my graffiti work. All weathering is mine with oils.

To better understand graffiti work I also re-did the colour on this side of the car.
